A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
