Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
