Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
