The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
