This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
