Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
